New research suggests that part of the cause of Alzheimer's may be a breakdown in the brains garbage disposal system. Specifically, researchers have shown an impairment in microglia, a cell that's part of the immune system in the brain and which help dispose of cellular garbage. A close examination of the brains of those who died with Alzheimer's demonstrated clear impairments in the microglia compared to the brains of those who died of other causes.
