This information came to me from the American Geriatrics Society’s “Healthinaging.org” consumer updates. It fits so well with the falls prevention activities at Aspirus I thought I would share it:
Most falls happen at home, although they can occur anywhere. They can surprise you when you are least expecting it, while you are carrying out your normal everyday activities. In fact, falls are the number one cause of hospital admissions for injuries in older adults. Each year, up to a third of adults over the age of 65 living at home experience a fall, and almost two-thirds of older adults who have a fall will have another fall within a year. Learning ways to help prevent falls is an important part of every older adult’s plan for maintaining their health, safety, independence and quality of life.
Preventing falls can help you or your aging loved ones stay independent and at home longer!
Some Aspirus resources include Falls Prevention Fridays, Stepping On, and Tai Chi, to name a few.
Healthinaging.org offers older adults and caregivers a video series on falls prevention, walking safety tips, and how to safeguard your home from falls. Tip sheets on preventing serious falls and how to use canes and walkers are also available online.
